Dear Families,
This week in the Catholic Church and community, we begin the season of Lent. This is the period of time where we prepare for Easter. Today, being Shrove Tuesday (or Pancake Day), many of the classes will make pancakes. Traditionally, Catholics used Shrove Tuesday to use up flour, milk, eggs and other household staples in preparation for Lent where they may have observed some kind of fasting, like Jesus did in the Desert for forty days and forty nights. Today, we can encourage each
other to use this time to fast in other ways. When I was a child, we were encouraged to give up chocolates or lollies for Lent. However, we can fast in many other ways and it can be so much more than “giving something up”. Maybe we could encourage our children to fast from the amount of social media they use, or fast from complaining or to do something extra for someone else. There are lots of ways that people can use this time to make positive changes and build great new habits.
It’s something we all can do.
Today, February 13, marks the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, who suffered trauma because of past government policies of forced child removal. Many of these removals occurred as the result of laws and policies aimed at assimilating the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population into the predominately white community. Stolen Generations survivors are some of Australia’s most vulnerable people and many have kept their stories and experiences secret for many years, even decades. Through hearing the resilient stories of Stolen
Generations survivors there is now a willingness for Australians to join in on the healing journey. To be part of solutions into the future. This is the spirit of the anniversary. Together as a school community, we pray for continued efforts towards understanding and healing for Indigenous Australians affected by this devastating part of our Nation’s history.
Next Wednesday the 21st, we have our Sacrament Workshop on at Sacred Heart at 5:30pm. This is for all families who would like their child to participate in the Sacrament Program this year. This is the only compulsory workshop for families making Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. We will hold other “fun nights” for this throughout the year for whole year levels, not just sacramental children.
Tomorrow marks St Valentine’s Day, a day traditionally devoted to love. I have been listening to a podcast recently where the host of the podcast explained love as, “making others feel important and believing that they can do well”. This is our primary work as a school community and at Lumen Christi we work hard every day to try and achieve this for our children.
Have a wonderful week ahead,
Sally

Our Ash Wednesday mass is on this Thursday 15th March, a time where we come together as a school at the church to celebrate the beginning of Lent. It is at 9:30am at Lumen Christi Church and we warmly invite parents and families to join us.
This should be coming home with the eldest child in each family tonight. I have asked for parents to read and sign the code of conduct and return the slip by Friday.
School Advisory Committee - Parents Wanted
We have a wonderful group of parents who meet once a term as the School Advisory Committeee.
The purpose of this group is to provide parent perspective to school decisions made by myself as the Principal.
We usually meet once a term on a Tuesday night at 7pm for an hour.
It's a great way for working parents to be involved if they aren't able to support in other ways during the day.
If this might interest you as a parent, I'd love to hear from you!
Please email me directly at: sdarby@churchill.catholic.edu.au
Or phone the office to speak with me on 51 222231
A friendly to all of our families that we are asking for each family to bring to school one box of tissues per child.
This will help us during the winter months as sneezes and colds become more present in classrooms.
This is an item that we ususally request that families provide which was unfortunately left off of our back to school items last year.
We thank you for your cooperation.

New School Uniform Addition - Skort
Parents & Friends Facebook Page
The Parents and Friends commitee would like to remind everyone about their facebook page. On this page you can find all the information about upcoming PnF events at the school, as well as second hand uniform information.
Parents & Friends - Zooper Doopers are BACK!
Our P&F have organised to sell Zooper Doopers again at school this term.
They will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtimes. Icy poles will also be available on Fridays when the weather is hot.
The cost will be 50c. each.
Car Park Safety
Parents and Carers might have noticed that we now have a teacher on duty on the Car Park every night after school. This is to ensure the safety of our children in that very busy 5-10 minutes when children are making their way to their cars to go home. Our parents are very responsible in the carpark, so I do thank everyone for their care whilst driving in and out of the school at pick up time. We wanted to add that extra layer of supervision to try and reduce the risk of any accidents occurring further.
A great start to the year - it is great to see everyone in the correct school uniform.
For those children opting to wear the skort, a reminder that it is a green skort. Black skirts and shorts on PE days only (Thursdays and Fridays).
Please remember that correct school uniform is black leather school shoes or all black leather runners with no coloured logos.
